Jagran Correspondent, Manali: Himachal Pradesh has witnessed the season’s first snowfall in Kaza, Lahaul-Spiti, marking a significant change in weather conditions across the region. The higher reaches of Kinnaur have also received snowfall, leading to a sharp drop in temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in several districts of Himachal Pradesh.

Light snowfall was reported in the high-altitude areas of Kinnaur’s Pooh subdivision, including Kunnu-Charang and Chitkul, as well as in the Spiti Valley of Lahaul-Spiti and other higher reaches, according to a report by Jagran.com.

Following the snowfall, maximum temperatures in several areas, including Losar, Kaza, Tabo and Kalpa, dropped by as much as 10 to 11 degrees Celsius.

Amid the sudden chill, the number of tourists travelling from Shimla to Manali via Kalpa, Samdo and Kaza and crossing Kunzum Pass has increased in recent days. A large number of visitors are reportedly arriving from West Bengal.

Despite the light snowfall, vehicular movement remains smooth for now. However, the changing weather conditions have increased the risk for travellers, particularly those travelling through high-altitude mountain passes.

Himachal Weather: Heavy Rain Expected Till September 29

According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, rain and adverse weather conditions are likely to continue across several parts of the state until September 29.

While sunny conditions are currently prevailing at the Shinkula and Baralacha passes, snowfall is also likely in these areas by evening.

DSP Keylong KD Sharma said the winter season has begun and that heavy snowfall could occur in high-altitude areas at any time.

He urged tourists to assess weather conditions before travelling through mountain passes and avoid undertaking journeys if conditions become unfavourable.

Manali Hoteliers Association president Roshan Thakur said the snowfall would provide a boost to tourism activity. He said preparations are underway for the Dussehra and Diwali season and expressed hope that business would remain strong during the festive period.

Meanwhile, several social media users have been sharing images and videos of snow-covered valleys following the season’s first snowfall.
