Jantar Mantar Protest: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the high-powered committee formed to probe the allegations of the use of a brutal police force during the students' protest on July 20 to submit its report within a month. In its ruling, the apex court asserted that it could not wait indefinitely for the committee's findings. The court formed the committee after the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and opposition parties accused the Delhi police of using extreme force during the march towards parliament earlier in July.
What Did SC Say In Its Order?
The Supreme Court expressed concerns about the delay in submission of a concrete report from the committee. It asked the committee to escalate the verification process and submit a report within a month. The court highlighted that the report submitted on October 31 just described the steps taken so far. It asked the committee to examine all the evidence received so far and seek responses from the concerned officials as well.
The apex court also asked the committee to consider complaints submitted by lawyers and other individuals on behalf of the victims.
Committee Claims Lack Of Material
The committee highlighted that it received hardly any complaints despite inviting the concerned individuals through notices in newspapers in 149 newspapers. It further stated that the situation remained similar even after re-issuing the notices on October 21.
Earlier, the Supreme Court appointed this committee to conduct an impartial investigation into the allegations of violence by the security officials. The committee is headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice R Subhash Reddy. The other members of the committee include former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Ravi Shankar Jha, former Delhi High Court judge Shalinder Kaur, former CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla and retired Meghalaya DGP LR Bishnoi.
The protesters had alleged that the Delhi Police had used excessive force on July 20 while the students were protesting against then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
