JNU Professor Expelled: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Friday sacked Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who is also a Congress MP, over the allegations of sexual harassment. The decision was taken based on the report submitted by the Internal Committee (IC) after an internal inquiry into the allegations. As per the university's statement, the committee had suggested "major punishment" against the professor after its probe.
Action After Internal Probe
As per the order, the professor of the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, has been sacked on an immediate basis following the probe findings. The university stated that the decision was taken upon following the due process and considering all the available facts.
"An Inquiry was conducted by the Internal Committee (IC) against Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam of the Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences, pursuant to allegations of sexual harassment. Based on the findings, the Internal Committee (IC) recommended Major Punishment to Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam," the order signed by Vice-Chancellor Santishree D Pandit said, reported NDTV.
"Upon following the due process and considering all available facts and as per the report of the Internal Committee (IC), the punishment of dismissal from the services of the University is hereby imposed on Prof. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, Centre for the Study of Social Systems, School of Social Sciences of the University, with immediate effect," it added.
DCW Sought Response From JNU
Earlier in September, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) had sought a response from the central university over the allegations made by the female students. DCW Chairperson Lata Gupta took suo motu cognisance of a video in which the students alleged that concrete action was not taken against the professor despite their submission of a complaint in May.
"The Action Taken Report (ATR), along with relevant details, is to be submitted before the Commission," the notice stated. Congress is yet to release any statement on his expulsion.
