Violence and vandalism were reported in Kolkata’s Jadavpur area on Sunday after a group of unidentified men on motorcycles allegedly targeted several CPI(M) offices and attacked the residence and party office of former Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Debabrata Majumdar.

According to police, CPI(M) offices were vandalised across six wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Wards 96, 99, 101, 102, 105 and 106. Party flags were allegedly pulled down and damaged, while martyrs’ altars at several locations were also vandalised.

The situation reportedly turned particularly tense in Ward 96, where Majumdar’s residence and party office are located. According to media reports, the attackers entered the former MLA’s house and allegedly assaulted members of his family. His elder brother was reportedly pushed to the floor during the incident.

“There was an attack on our party office. They also attacked our homes. In protest against these attacks, we are holding a peaceful and democratic protest," ANI quoted Majumdar.

The family alleged that they made repeated calls to the police for help, but claimed that officers reached the spot around an hour later.

Police Use Lathi Charge To Control Situation

Tension was also reported in Wards 101 and 105, following which police used a lathi charge to disperse the crowd and prevent the situation from escalating.

Local sources claimed that the group of bikers had been creating trouble in Jadavpur as well as the Narendrapur area of South 24 Parganas.

CPI(M), TMC Question Police Response

The incident has triggered criticism from both the CPI(M) and the TMC, with leaders and those affected by the violence questioning the police response.

Victims and political leaders have alleged that BJP supporters were behind the attacks. Former MLA Debabrata Majumdar claimed that all those involved were BJP supporters and said he had never witnessed such a situation during his political career.

The BJP has not issued an official response to the allegations so far. Police are investigating the incidents and the identities of those involved.
