The Mamata Banerjee-led faction of the Trinamool Congress on Monday unveiled a new logo that features its interim election symbol, a football player. The faction has directed its leaders and elected representatives to make the people familiar with it as 15 days remain for the bypoll.

The new logo places the football player at its centre, surrounded by the faction's name "Mamata All India Trinamool Congress" in white against a blue background. The hallmark tricolour from the original symbol, Saffron, white and green, has also been incorporated into the design.

The faction has, for now, lost its familiar name, AITC, and its flowers-and-grass symbol. The symbol has been frozen by the Election Commission as rival Ritabrata Banerjee faction also staked claim to the party and the symbol.

The poll body has allotted separate interim identities to the two factions for the October 6 bypolls. While Mamata got "Mamata All India Trinamool Congress" and the "football player" symbol, the Ritabrata-Arup Roy faction got "Democratic Trinamool Congress" and the "envelope" symbol.

Mamata's faction has extended support to the Congress candidate in Nandigram after its candidate withdrew nomination. The only contest for the group remains in Rejinagar bypolls. Mamata-led group is making efforts to ensure that voters can connect the new symbol with the political identity they have traditionally associated with the TMC.

News agency PTI cited party sources saying that all office-bearers, leaders, workers and elected representatives have been asked to use their respective platforms to disseminate the information regarding the new logo and familiarise voters with the new symbol.

The leaders have already started posting the logo on social media from Monday afternoon.

The dispute between the two factions has also acquired a legal dimension as MamataBanerjee has challenged the Commission's freeze before the Supreme Court. On Monday, the top court agreed to urgently list her plea, with the rival side also set to get an opportunity to make its submissions.
