Mumbai News: An FIR has been registered against a 10-year-old neighbour four days after an 18-month-old toddler was allegedly pushed to her death from the 6th floor of a Goregaon building. The Dindoshi police registered the FIR on Sunday. The toddler's mother filed the complaint, and the case was lodged.

The 10-year-old was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB). It said that the girl shall undergo counselling and appointed an NGO for the purpose. However, she was released into the care of her parents. According to sources cited by TOI, the family left the society and went to stay with their relatives.

The 10-year-old girl and her family had moved into the housing society just two weeks before the incident.

What Happened With The Toddler?

On October 14, the toddler was playing with a cat in the common corridor outside their sixth-floor flat sometime between 9 pm and 9.30 pm. When her mother realised she was missing, she sent her 12-year-old son to look for her. Unable to find his sister, the boy peered down the stairwell and saw someone lying in the basement. He recognised the clothes as the ones his sister had been wearing and immediately ran to tell their mother. By then, other residents had already found the injured toddler and rushed her to a civic hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

What Did Toddler's Mother Say?

“The security railing on the sixth floor is about three-and-a-half feet tall and my daughter couldn’t have lost her balance and fallen off it. After police checked the CCTV footage, it was found that the 10-year-old girl had gestured at my daughter and summoned her towards the lift,” the mother said in her statement to police. After her daughter went to her, the 10-year-old lifted her and threw her down the stairwell. “She then ran away... It appears she understood the gravity of her actions.”

Initially, police recorded it as an accidental death. By law, children below seven are totally exempt from being prosecuted under criminal law. Those between 7 and 12 years are excluded only if the court believes they did not understand the consequences of their actions.

According to experts, the 10-year-old girl must undergo counselling and rehabilitation for better healing.
