Arunachal Militant Ambush: A jawan of the Assam Rifles was killed and four were others injured in an ambush by militants on a patrol team along the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district on Tuesday. According to officials, the Assam Rifles patrol team came under ambush around 6.30 am near Nampong Nallah in Nampong Circle. 

When the incident took place, personnel of the 21 Assam Rifles were patrolling an area where border fencing work is underway.

The India-Myanmar border in Changlang district has remained sensitive because of the movement of insurgent groups operating in the region and across the international boundary.

What Preliminary Reports Found

Officials said the preliminary reports suggested that suspected militants opened fire on the patrol team when they were patrolling the border area. Havildar Jankhokai Kuki (42) lost his life in the ambush. Security forces evacuated four injured personnel for medical treatment, and details of their condition were awaited.

Moments after the incident, the security forces launched a massive search operation for the attackers in the region.

NSCN (K-YA) Likely Behind Attack

NSCN (K/YA) - National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang/Yung Aung - a banned armed rebel group might have carried out the ambush. NSCN (K/YA), a faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), NSCN (K), demands a separate homeland for the Naga people. The Home Ministry website says that the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang), NSCN (K), and all its formations and front organisations are banned in India under Section 35 of Unlawful Activities (Preventive) Act 1967.

However, there was no official confirmation about the attackers' identity. An official statement on the attack is awaited. Changlang SP Kirli Padu said he had received information about the incident and directed the officer-in-charge of Changlang police station to gather details.

"We have received information about the incident that took place along the India-Myanmar border and have asked the OC of Changlang police station to collect information related to it," the SP said.
