After four months of state leadership tussle, Congress has finally decided to rejig its Punjab unit as Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring is reported to have stepped down from the post of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief. The party is yet to confirm the development
The Congress is likely to name Warring's successor by Friday. Notably, the Punjab Congress was divided into two factions, led by Warring and former CM Charanjit Singh Channi.
The fault lines widened, and the tensions peaked when Bhupesh Baghel was the AICC general secretary in-charge of the state. The issue led to his replacement by Sachin Pilot, who took charge this month.
Buzz grows over Raja Warring's successor
Meanwhile, the buzz has grown over the potential successor of Warring as the state is set to go to assembly polls early next year. Among the frontrunners are former minister Vijay Inder Singla, Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
However, according to Congress sources cited by Jagran.com, the Congress high command agreed on the name of Vijay Inder Singla for the post of Punjab Congress state president.
Fought factionalism in 2022, lost to it in 2026
Warring became the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief in April 2022, in the aftermath of a trounce by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The party, which had returned to power in 2017, was ousted after a single term due to many reasons, including internal factionalism.
Warring took charge after a prolonged rift between Captain Amarinder Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu. Five years later, Warring found himself entangled in the same situation with Channi as his rival. The fractiousness peaked in recent months.
