The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the licences or registration certificates of 30 food establishments, including Mumbai's 122-year-old Irani cafe Kyani & Co. and Royal China, over alleged violations of food safety and hygiene requirements.

According to an FDA statement, the licences or registration certificates of 13 establishments in Mumbai, six in the Konkan division, eight in the Pune division and three in the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar division were suspended.

What FDA Found Inside Kyani & Co. And Other Mumbai Outlets?

Kyani & Co.: Officials found cats, rat droppings, live flies, and dead cockroaches in food preparation and storage areas. Blood was found accumulated inside a refrigerator, alongside an open sewage manhole in the processing section.

Colaba Sweet Mart: An inspection found live cockroaches, lizards, flies, and larvae. The outlet lacked required pest-control measures, employee medical fitness records, and personal protective equipment.

EverSub India Pvt Ltd (Subway, Lower Parel): Its licence was suspended after officials found a faulty refrigerator, a mould-like layer, foul odours, and live cockroaches.

Daffodils Fast Food Inn (Vile Parle): The FDA suspended its licence after finding the outlet operating in extremely unhygienic conditions, including dirty refrigeration equipment, non-functional temperature displays, and food stored alongside workers' personal belongings.

Arun Vilas Farsan (Dharavi) and Ruchi Veg Restaurant (Parel): Licences were suspended over sanitation and hygiene violations.

The FDA has also initiated legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act against Royal China, QSR Brands India, Tiffin, United Bakery & Stores, Shree Padmavati Enterprises, and Hotel Purandar Vilas.

Food Stock Worth Rs 1.19 Crore Seized

The FDA seized 50,601.78 kg of food stock worth Rs 1.19 crore between September 23 and 27 as part of a statewide festive-season crackdown. The seized products included khoa, paneer, ghee, cream, sweets, shrikhand, lassi, coconut oil, farsan, potato wafers and bhadang, with several items suspected to be substandard, adulterated, unsafe or wrongly labelled.
