Punjab has recently seen several incidents of shootings in recent weeks that have put the law and order situation in the state under scrutiny. In a recent incident, an assistant sub-inspector was shot at by three bike-borne assailants in Amritsar on Sunday evening.

The police officials said that ASI Sukhchain Singh, posted in Government Railway Police (GRP), sustained a bullet injury to his left arm in an attack while he was returning home from duty.

Singh was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Ajnala. Speaking about the attack, he said the assailants approached from behind and shot him before fleeing

The police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the incident. A similar incident had taken place on the night of September 18-9 when ASI Harjit Singh was gunned down by two bike-borne assailants at the Bhagtanwala grain market in Amritsar.

Former Sarpanch shot dead in Ludhiana

Just a day before the latest incident, a former Sarpanch, linked to Shiromani Akali Dal, was killed by two bike-borne assailants in Ludhiana's Manewal village.

Navtej Singh alias Neetu (60) was heading home in his Innova car on Saturday when the assailants surrounded him near a toll plaza on the South City Road and fired 10 rounds before fleeing the spot.

Based on Navtej Singh's son's complaint, a case was registered against eight individuals, including two identified suspects. The investigation is on in the case.

Influencer Mad Sandhu shot dead

On the same day, a popular Punjabi influencer and LGBTQ+ personality Madhusudan Sandhu aka Mad Sandhu was shot at a car washing point on Loharka Road in Amritsar. He succumbed to bullet injuries while being rushed to a hospital.

He, too, was shot by motorcycle-borne assailants. After visiting the crime scene, Amritsar Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill said that preliminary investigation indicated it was a planned murder and Sandhu was being tracked.

Gurudwara Sewadar shot

On September 29, four masked men scaled the perimeter wall of a gurdwara in Sangrur's Badrukhan village after midnight and shot a sewadar, Jaswant Singh.

According to police, the assailants arrived in a car and entered the gurdwara's community kitchen. They overpowered a sewadar, Ajaib Singh.

While they were trying to gag him and tie his hands and legs, Jaswant heard Ajaib's muffled cries and came out of the adjoining room.

A confrontation broke out, leading one of the assailants to fire at him from close range. Jaswant suffered bullet injuries to his chest. He was rushed to a hospital after the attackers fled the scene.

Oppn slams Bhagwant Mann government

The Opposition parties have launched a scathing attack on the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over rising crimes in the state. On Monday, BJP spokesperson and Lok Sabha MP Sambit Patra said that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated, alleging four murders in the state in the last 48 hours.

Meanwhile, North American Punjabi Association executive director Satnam Singh Chahal on Sunday raised the issue of rampant crime incidents. He expressed concern over reports of shootings, killings, extortion, gangster activities, drug trafficking, illegal weapons and attacks on police personnel in Punjab.

While reacting to the former Sarpanch's murder, Congress leader Anil Joshi said, "Every day, 2-3 murders are taking place in Punjab. It is a matter of great concern that law and order appears to have completely collapsed in the state... They came in the name of revolution and change and promised to create a Rangla Punjab, but instead they have ruined the state and created Kangla Punjab."
