Jagran Correspondent, Haridwar: Surendra Koli, an accused in the 2006 Nithari serial killings case, died by suicide on Friday in Haridwar. Before his death, Koli had managed to conceal his true identity and lived in the area for about 15 days, working as a night watchman at Deepganga Society in Roshanabad. During his stay, he introduced himself to everyone as Sadaram.

In an effort to generate income in anticipation of the large crowds during the Kumbh Mela, he started a tea stall in the Saptasarovar area. He set up the stall with the help of Dharmendra Kaushik, a resident of Narela, Delhi. Kaushik arranged a meeting between Koli and contractor Jai Kashyap, a resident of Sidcul, after an introduction by a female lawyer.

Rental Agreements, Financial Strain And Phone Argument

Investigation showed that Anil Sharma, a former jail visitor, rented out the shop space to Koli at a monthly rent of Rs 7,000, along with a security deposit of Rs 14,000.

Koli was facing severe financial difficulties and did not even have enough cash to buy a birthday gift for his child. He was also upset after an argument on the phone with an unknown individual. Kaushik last met Koli on Wednesday evening, claiming he gave him Rs 2,500 during that meeting.

Two Identity Cards Recovered; Investigation Launched

Police recovered two identity cards from Koli's bag. One card listed his name as Sadaram, son of Shankar, a resident of Almora. The other was his Aadhaar card, which identified him as Surendra Koli, son of Shankar, a resident of Sector 31, Noida.

Local contacts and associates claim they were completely unaware of his identity as Surendra Koli. Police are currently recording statements, awaiting the post-mortem report, and reviewing his medical history following a diabetes diagnosis. Investigators are probing to ascertain if anyone knew his real identity before his death.
