Jagran Team, New Delhi: Continuous rain due to the low pressure area originating from the Bay of Bengal has disrupted normal life in multiple states. The rain that had been continuing in Uttar Pradesh since Thursday evening appeared to ease on Sunday, but it still caused significant loss of life and property. As of Sunday, 56 people had died in rain-related accidents in just three days.
IMD Forecasts More Rain Today
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate rain with thunderstorms and strong winds in Hamirpur, Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Fatehpur, Kannauj, Farrukhabad, and Unnao on Monday. However, heavy rain is possible in some places.
The heavy rains pose a major risk for Kharif and pulse crops. Early rice crops have fallen in the fields, along with sesame, sorghum, millet, black gram, and mung bean crops. Relief Commissioner Dr Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod reviewed relief and rescue operations on Sunday by interacting with the District Magistrates and Additional District Magistrates of the affected districts.
On Sunday, a portion of the Bhakra Nangal Dam in Rampur collapsed, threatening to intensify the leak. Meanwhile, in Unnao, the toll plaza was flooded on the Ganga Expressway.
The Relief Commissioner said that from September 25 to the morning of September 27, the state recorded 66.5 mm of rainfall, while the normal rainfall for this period is 7.6 mm. Excessive rainfall was recorded in 56 out of 75 districts.
Due to the rising water level of the Gandak River in Bihar, the Tirhut Canal embankment near Raksa village in Muzaffarpur breached by about 50 feet late Saturday night. The road built on the embankment was also washed away by the breach. This submerged 500 acres of paddy crop.
5,01,650 cusecs of water was released from the Gandak Barrage in West Champaran district at 6 pm on Sunday. This flood affected 34 villages in the district. Several schools were flooded. Floodwaters entered the forests of the Valmikinagar and Madanpur forest areas of the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR). All 36 gates of the barrage have been lifted.
In Sitamarhi, the Bagmati River is flowing 30 centimetres and the Lalbakeya River is flowing eight centimetres above the danger mark. In Madhepur, Madhubani, the Kosi river's water has entered nearly 300 homes.
6 Killed In Chhattisgarh, Rain Lashes Rajasthan
Six people have died so far in rain-related incidents in Chhattisgarh, while four are missing. Nine people trapped at the Lomas Rishi Ashram and Cowshed in Rajim, Gariaband district, were rescued and brought to safety. There has been rain in Sikar, Churu, Tonk and Jaisalmer of Rajasthan.
