Uttar Pradesh Elections: The assembly election in Uttar Pradesh is likely to be conducted in the early months of 2027. With around 160 of the total 403 constituencies, Purvanchal, the eastern part of the state, holds significant importance in deciding the poll results. The region consists of several large districts, including Gorakhpur, Azamgarh, Varanasi, and Mirzapur. The region has been the centre of Uttar Pradesh politics for decades and is prioritised by every prominent party.

Purvanchal: Importance Of Regional Forces

While the larger parties, such as the BJP and the Samajwadi Party, have their own vote base in Purvanchal, the regional forces also play a significant role. The regional parties, including Anupriya Patel's Apna Dal (S), OP Rajbhar-led SBSP, and Nishad Party, led by Sanjay Nishad, have a strong presence in multiple districts. Their undeniable importance makes the alliance politics relevant and essential in Uttar Pradesh.

Changing Preferences Of Voters

While the BJP has managed to emerge as a favourite in the past decade, its vote share has reduced in the past two polls. Earlier in the 2017 assembly election, the Saaffar Party registered a massive victory by winning 312 seats, while the Samajwadi Party was reduced to 47 seats. However, despite losing, the Akhilesh Yadav-led party improved its tally in the 2022 polls by winning 111 seats. In Purvanchal, the SP managed to win 48 seats, 31 more than what it won in 2017, according to Election Commission of India (ECI) data.

Samajwadi Party's Comeback

Samajwadi Party fought the 2024 Lok Sabha polls with Congress and emerged as the single largest party of the state by winning 37 of the total 80 seats. The Akhilesh Yadav-led party managed to win nine of the 12 Lok Seats in the region. The region consists of Gorakhpur (stronghold of CM Yogi Adityanath), Azamgarh (bastion of Akhilesh Yadav), and Varanasi (PM Modi's constituency).

While the Samajwadi Party would contest to repeat its performance of the Lok Sabha polls, the ruling NDA would like to increase its influence over the region.
