Marking a historic turning point in the state's economic resurgence, the Government of West Bengal today hosted an exclusive Investors' Meet on the occasion of World Tourism Day 2026 at the Crystal Hall, Taj Bengal, Kolkata.
The meeting was attended by Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta, Tourism Minister Dr Shankar Ghosh, and Minister of State for Tourism, Purnima Chakraborty. Additional Chief Secretary Barun Kumar Roy, Industrialist Harshbardhan Neotia, and another 36 Investors in Tourism Sectors and several dignitaries.
Finance Minister highlighted the potential of West Bengal Tourism and ease of doing business. He pointed out the bottlenecks of the pre-existing system and the new energy and emphasis given by the new government. Minister of State for Tourism portrayed the diversity of the destinations of West Bengal.
Addressing industry captains, hospitality leaders, and investors, the Minister-in-Charge of Tourism warmly welcomed the gathered investors as "lion-like leaders" chosen to bring prosperity to the state, emphasising that providing employment and enabling citizens to live with dignity and self-respect is the highest form of service.
Overcoming Decades of Stagnation
Critiquing the prolonged stagnation of the past 50 years, where employment generation hit near-zero due to a lack of investments, political inertia, absence of political will, greed, corruption, nepotism, and a failure to understand true Indian ethos, the State Government underscored that those dark phases are firmly in the past.
Grounded in the visionary national impetus of Prime Minister Narendra Modi toward national economic resurgence, and driven by the dynamic leadership, constant support, and reformative governance of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, West Bengal is stepping into an unprecedented era of growth and industrial transformation.
From Intent to Investment: Sector-Wise Breakdown & Employment
Aligned with the theme "From Intent to Investment", major investor commitments totalling Rs 12,534 Crore have been unlocked, projected to generate over 22,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities across the state's tourism landscape.
The detailed sectoral breakdown of investments and job creation highlights this massive capital inflow:
- Hotel Brands & Business Hotels: Major announcements by industry leaders including Ambuja Neotia Group, Apeejay Surendra Group (The Park), KKG, EVARA Hospitality, MLA Group, The Jain Group, Hilton & Beekay, and Sonerio Hotels drive the urban hospitality expansion.
- Tea Tourism & North Bengal Resorts: Strategic investments anchored by Luxmi Tea Co., BLG Group, L.R. Agro (ITC Mementoes), Hurdeodass Co. (Matigara), Dzongri Properties, LBS Hotel & Resorts, and Four Vedas Hotel & Resorts unlock the scenic and ecological tourism potential of North Bengal.
- Destinations, Heritage, Leisure & Wellness: Projects championed by Sree Balaji Group, Tulsa Group, Pomesh Health Care, Bari Kothi Heritage Hotels, Satya Spa & Resorts, and Hotel Sonar Bangla Group elevate heritage tourism and wellness destinations across the state.
Redesigning Tourism through Digital Agenda, AI and Public-Private Partnership
In consonance with the global objectives of World Tourism Day 2026, the Department of Tourism officially announced a complete sectoral redesign leveraging a robust Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure smart destination management, global reach, and enhanced traveller experiences.
Furthermore, true to the digital redesign strategy, Hon’ble Minister launched a brand-new bilingual digital platform www.shankarghosh.in and a mobile app, where anyone can contact directly with him, send proposals, ideas, and lodge complaints.
Aggressive Destination Development & Grand Economic Vision
Guided by resolute determination to "turn every pebble," the department is aggressively exploring unexplored landscapes and niches to establish West Bengal as a premier global tourism destination. The ultimate strategic mission of this new dispensation is to transform West Bengal into a major foreign currency-earning state of India through modern, sustainable, and tech-enabled tourism.
