Ahmedabad Plane Crash: One year after walking away from the wreckage of London-bound Air India Flight 171, the lone survivor, Vishwakumar Ramesh, said that the world sees his survival but not the burden he carries every day.

Speaking to news agency PTI, Ramesh said, "People see that I've survived, but they don't always see the challenges that continue behind closed doors. I still struggle with sleep, anxiety and difficult memories. A year on, I'm still trying to rebuild my life and support my family as best I can."

Air India Crash

On June 12 last year, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating as AI-171 crashed into a student hostel and canteen building of a medical college in Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad, shortly after takeoff. The tragic accident claimed the lives of 260 people, including 241 individuals on board the aircraft and 19 people on the ground.

How Vishwakumar Ramesh Survived?

Vishwakumar Ramesh, a British citizen, was seated in row 11A when the plane crashed. He managed to escape through a shattered emergency exit. Video footage that went viral following the incident showed Ramesh in shock and covered in blood as he limped away from the burning wreckage.

Ramesh lost his brother, Ajay, in the disaster, who was seated just a few rows ahead of him. Speaking to the BBC five months after the accident, Ramesh said, "I'm the luckiest man, but I also lost everything. My brother—for me, I lost my brother."

Following the incident, Ramesh was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He was completely cut off from his family life.

"Now I'm alone. I just sit in my room, I don't talk to my wife or son. I just like being alone in my house," he said.

Speaking about his condition on the first anniversary of the disaster, Ramesh said, "I'm grateful to be alive, but survival is only part of the story. What I've faced since then has been far more difficult than I can put into words."

According to the report, Air India confirmed that representatives from both the airline and the Tata Group have met with Ramesh and are in constant contact with him. The company stated that it is "actively working to ensure that appropriate support continues to be extended to him."
