Parliament Deadlock: Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday said that the government has agreed to hold a detailed discussion on the students' protest in Delhi and other parts of the country, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah ready to make a statement on all the aspects, including the police action on the protesters during the Cockroach Janta Party's "Sansad Chalo" march on July 20.
"We have made it clear to the BAC (Business Advisory Committee) of the Lok Sabha that the government is ready for a detailed discussion on the students and youth agitations that have been going on in different parts of the country as well as police action. The home minister will reply to the debate on behalf of the government," he said.
The government's approval came amid a deadlock between the opposition and the treasury benches over the issue, disrupting Parliament's functioning throughout the Monsoon Session. The opposition MPs have been demanding Amit Shah's statement on the police action against students, questioning his absence from the Lok Sabha during the session, which began on July 20 and is scheduled to end on August 13.
Rijiju, however, asserted that the opposition MPs should not create a ruckus in the House during Amit Shah's statement and listen to him "peacefully".
"My only point made to the Opposition is that while the discussion and a reply are being made, the Opposition should not create disturbances to prevent the statement of the Home Minister. They must listen to the reply of the Home Minister and the government. Once discussion begins, we must have a threadbare discussion," the Parliamentary Affairs Minister added.
Rijiju further alleged differences between the Congress and Samajwadi Party. "Now, there appear to be some differences between the Congress and the Samajwadi Party, which they need to resolve. As for the student issue, we are ready for a discussion. We have stated our position. Now, it is up to the Samajwadi Party and the Congress to sort out the differences between them," he said.
The Monsoon Session has seen repeated adjournments and virtually no business, except for the debate on the anti-paper-leak bill -- The Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 -- which was passed by both Houses of Parliament. Three more bills were passed in the two Houses with little or no debate, and two other bills were passed by the Lok Sabha.
Rijiju Meets Rahul Gandhi:
Kiren Rijiju on Thursday met Lok Sabha LoP and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to end the deadlock and hinted at a breakthrough, saying that "we are political opponents and not enemies". This is the second meeting between Rijiju and Rahul to end the impasse.
"I had a productive conversation with Rahul Gandhi. We made a request regarding a specific matter and also discussed other issues. We desire continuous communication and coordinated action with the Congress and other opposition parties. We may be political opponents, but we are not enemies; therefore, we should work together in the national interest," Rijiju had said.
Police Action During CJP Protest:
The impasse between the government and the opposition began after the Delhi police used lathis and tear gas shells against student protesters during their "Parliament March" on July 20, called by the Cockroach Janta Party. Students also alleged that RAF personnel deployed at Jantar Mantar fired pellet guns at the protesters, with the CRPF confirming the incident.
Opposition parties since then have been demanding a statement by Home Minister Amit Shah on the police "brutality". Apart from the students' protest, the opposition parties have also demanded a discussion on the alleged theft of donations at the Ayodhya Ram temple.
