PM Modi's Indonesia Visit: India and Indonesia on Tuesday signed key agreements to strengthen defence and security cooperation, including a deal for the supply of India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Indonesian military. The agreement, which comes during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jakarta marks a major boost for India’s defence exports.

Indonesia To Buy BrahMos And Astra Missiles

Under the agreement, Indonesia will receive BrahMos missiles developed jointly by India and Russia. The country is also set to import India’s indigenously developed Astra air-to-air missiles. The Astra missile, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is a beyond-visual-range missile designed to track and destroy highly manoeuvrable enemy aircraft.

Maritime Security Cooperation

Along with defence agreements, India and Indonesia also finalised a framework to improve cooperation in maritime safety and security. Addressing a joint press conference, PM Modi said the agreements reflected growing trust between the two nations and would strengthen cooperation in defence, security and maritime areas.

“The growing trust between our countries is strengthening our defence, security, and maritime cooperation. Today, we have reached an agreement to enhance defence exchanges, disaster management, and industrial cooperation,” PM Modi said. The two countries also signed agreements related to healthcare, minerals and technology.

20 Key Outcomes Of PM Modi’s Indonesia Visit

In a post on X, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the list of 20 key outcomes from PM Modi’s State Visit to Indonesia. These include:

1. Minerals and Steel Supply Chain Cooperation
The two countries signed MoU to boost investment in minerals and mining, improve access to advanced extraction and processing technologies, encourage joint studies, and strengthen critical mineral supply chains.

2. Maritime Safety and Security Cooperation Extended
India and Indonesia extended their maritime cooperation framework to strengthen coordination between their Coast Guards, improve maritime domain awareness, search and rescue operations and promote freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific.

3. Rare Earth Magnets Partnership
An MoU was signed between Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), Midwest Ltd., and PT PERMINAS to develop rare earth magnets.

4. BrahMos Missile Cooperation
India and Indonesia agreed to cooperate on the BrahMos missile system, boosting New Delhi's indigenous manufacturing under Atmanirbhar Bharat.

5. Air-to-Air Missile Cooperation
The agreement will facilitate cooperation on India's indigenous Astra air-to-air missile, strengthen defence exports, promote technology collaboration and support India's missile development ecosystem.

6. SAIL-Krakatau Steel Joint Venture
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and PT Krakatau Steel will establish a stainless-steel slab manufacturing facility in Indonesia. This will promote technology sharing, industrial development and job creation.

7. Space Cooperation
India and Indonesia further extended their framework agreement on the peaceful exploration and use of outer space, encouraging joint research.

8. Restoration of Prambanan Temple Complex
India will assist in the conservation and restoration of the Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, strengthening cultural diplomacy and preserving shared heritage.

9. Agriculture and Allied Sectors Cooperation
The agreement promotes collaboration in sustainable agriculture, crop development, agricultural machinery, research and food security to benefit farmers in both countries.

10. Medical Products Regulation Cooperation
India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and Indonesia's BPOM signed an MoU to exchange regulatory knowledge, strengthen cooperation and improve market access for Indian medical products.

11. Disaster Management Cooperation
India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Indonesia's disaster management agency will collaborate on best practices, early warning systems, risk assessment and disaster response.

12. Telecommunications Cooperation
The agreement promotes collaboration in advanced telecommunications technologies. It includes wireless and quantum communication, along with joint innovation and technology exchange.

13. Research, Technology and Innovation Partnership
India and Indonesia agreed to cooperate in research, innovation, startup ecosystems, knowledge exchange and emerging technologies.

14. Health Workforce Collaboration
The arrangement will support fellowship programmes, specialised clinical training, and greater mobility for qualified healthcare professionals.

15. Indonesian Liaison Officer at IFC-IOR
Indonesia will deploy a liaison officer at India's Information Fusion Centre–Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) to strengthen real-time maritime information sharing and Indo-Pacific maritime security.

16. Supply of Wheat Seeds
India will supply 100 tonnes of DWR-162 wheat seeds to Indonesia to support food security and strengthen agricultural cooperation.

17. Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural Diplomacy
Both countries will commemorate the shared legacy of Rabindranath Tagore and Ki Hajar Dewantara through year-long cultural, educational, academic and people-to-people exchanges, marking the centenary of Tagore's 1927 visit to Indonesia.

18. IIM Bangalore Campus in Indonesia
Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) will establish a branch campus at Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Indonesia, showcasing India's higher education expertise.

19. ONDC-ION Digital Commerce Cooperation
India's Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and Indonesia's Indonesia Open Network (ION) will collaborate to promote Digital Public Infrastructure and make digital commerce more accessible and inclusive.

20. Election Commission Cooperation
The Election Commission of India (ECI) and Indonesia's General Elections Commission (KPU) signed an MoU to share best practices in election management, technology use and human resource development.
