ICGS Samudra Pratap: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday hailed the commissioning of Indian Coast Guard Ship Samudra Pratap, calling it a significant step towards India's vision of self-reliance, a boost to the nation's self-security system and a reflection of a commitment to sustainability.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, "The commissioning of Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Samudra Pratap is noteworthy for numerous reasons, including the fact that it adds strength to our vision of self-reliance, boosts our security apparatus and reflects a commitment to sustainability, among others."

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commissioned ICGS Samudra Pratap, India’s first indigenously designed and built Pollution Control Vessel (PCV), at Goa Shipyard Limited on January 5, 2026, marking an important milestone for India’s maritime capabilities.

What Is Samudra Pratap? Indian Coast Guard Ship To Fight Marine Pollution

- Indigenous Designed And Built PCV: Built at a cost of Rs 284 crore, Samudra Pratap is India Coast Guard’s first indigenously designed and built Pollution Control Vessel (PCV).

- Advanced Pollution Response: Measuring 115 meters, the ship is equipped with cutting-edge equipment such as skimmers, containment booms, and storage tanks capable of handling large-scale pollution incidents. An onboard laboratory allows for the real-time analysis of marine contaminants.

- Multi-Role Operations: Besides pollution control, the ship features a helipad and fast interceptor boats that support aerial and surface interventions. It also bolsters search-and-rescue (SAR) missions, anti-smuggling operations, and maritime law enforcement, projecting power across the Indian Ocean Region.

- Operational Endurance: Designed for long-range patrols, the ship can autonomously monitor thousands of nautical miles for extended periods, providing a persistent presence across India’s 7,500-km coastline and 2.01 million sq km Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

- Aatmanirbhar Bharat: From propulsion to avionics, the Pollution Control Vessel is fully engineered with indigenous content, reducing reliance on foreign maritime technology.

- Force Multiplier: The vessel will complement existing fleetmates like Samudra Prahari and Samudra Vanvijay, strengthening India’s response to shipping accidents, illegal dumping and offshore activities that pose severe risks to marine life, fisheries and marine economies.

The induction of ICGS Samudra Pratap to the fleet will significantly enhance the Indian Coast Guard's operational capacity and capability to ensure maritime safety, security, and preservation of the marine environment.
