Digvijay Singh's praise for Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) has struck discord within the Congress as his remarks were weaponised by the ruling BJP to target Rahul Gandhi. The issue was discussed between Gandhi and Singh on the occasion of Congress's 140th foundation day.

According to a report by Jagran.com, Gandhi shook hands with Digvijay Singh and said, "You misbehaved yesterday!" This caused laughter among the leaders standing around Singh.

Senior Congress leader and former party president Sonia Gandhi was also present on the occasion. Gandhi's sarcastic jibe came a day after Singh posted an old picture of PM Narendra Modi sitting on the floor at the feet of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani.

He posted it with a caption, "I found this picture. It is very impressive. How a grassroots RSS volunteer and a Jan Sangh and BJP worker, sitting on the floor at the feet of leaders, became the Chief Minister of a state and the Prime Minister of the country. This is the power of organization. Jai Siya Ram."

His post was widely shared and perceived as some discontent with the party. The BJP picked up the issue and targeted Gandhi, saying Singh's remarks highlight 'open dissent' against his leadership.

BJP's national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said that Gandhi was bringing his party "upside down" because he had been sidelined in the party.

"It's because our Narendra Modi is 'guddri ke lal' (diamond in the rough) and their leader is 'Jawahar ke lal' (great-grandson of Jawaharlal Nehru). Since our Narendra Modi has risen to the top from the bottom, he is taking the party (BJP) also to the top from the bottom," Trivedi said at a press conference at the BJP headquarters.

"Since their leader is 'Jawahar ke lal' who is now 'side down from up', he is bringing his party upside down," Trivedi added.

Singh, however, clarified on his remarks, terming Congress 'all united.' Lashing out at BJP for allegedly attempting to sow discord within the Nehru-Gandhi family, Singh said, "There is no difference in ideology. We (Congress) are all united, and this Nehru-Gandhi family is a family in which two people have been martyred. I strongly condemn the BJP's attempts to sow discord within this family."
