Tamil Nadu Election 2026 Voting Highlights: After months of intense campaigning, Tamil Nadu headed to the polls today, Thursday, April 23, for a decisive, single-phase election to decide the next government in the southern state.
Voting for the 234-member Assembly began at 7 AM and ended at 6 PM. The state recorded the highest-ever turnout of 84.41 per cent out of over 5.73 crore voters eligible to decide the fate of 4,023 candidates. The results will be counted on May 4.
The high-stakes contest primarily pits the DMK-led SPA against the AIADMK-led NDA, with Chief Minister M K Stalin seeking to retain power and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami fighting to return to the treasury benches after five years. However, the entry of actor-turned-politician Vijay’s TVK has introduced a fresh layer of competition, turning the battle into a multi-cornered contest.
The election is being conducted under tight security and a massive crackdown by election authorities to prevent inducements to influence voters.
