Tamil Nadu: An outrage broke out in Tamil Nadu after a video of a migrant worker being brutally beaten by a group of teens went viral on the social media platforms on Monday. In the video, the accused were seen attacking the worker inside a moving train that was travelling from the capital city, Chennai, to Thiruthani. One of the accused later shared the video on Instagram with a Tamil song in the background, seemingly to boast their regional pride. The police stated that all four accused have been detained, adding that the victim has sustained serious injuries and is receiving treatment.
The Tamil Nadu police, while providing details, stated that the victim belonged to Maharashtra and works as a laborer in the capital city. The authority further stated that all the accused had been detained, adding that the court released one of them, citing his academics. With just a few months remaining in the much-hyped Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the opposition parties have raised concern over the law and order in the state.
Apart from this, the Congress leaders have also asked the authorities to take "immediate" actions to curb these incidents. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Congress MP Karti Chidambaram suggested the police to conduct identity checks, adding that the history sheeters must report to the "nearest police station thrice a week".
"I reiterate my earlier demand. Time has come for the Tamil Nadu police to prove its mettle. A statewide "Show of Force" operation is needed immediately. Massive checking of all vehicles plying the roads & identity checks must be done. All history sheeters must be required to report to the nearest police station thrice a week," Chidambaram stated in his post.
However, DMK leader TKS Elangovan stated that the police immediately took action after the incident came to their notice, adding that thousands of migrant laborers "feel safe" in the state.
