State Bureau, Kolkata: Amid the internal rift in the Trinamool Congress (TMC), party chief Mamata Banerjee has reportedly called a high-level meeting of the MLAs at her residence in Kolkata. As per the reports, the former chief minister has also reached out to the 58 rebel legislators and has asked them to join the meeting. The reports also suggest that Banerjee has asked the rebels to rejoin the party fold, assuring them of necessary action.

Earlier this week, the rebel legislators elected expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as the Leader of the Opposition, establishing control over the Trinamool legislative party. The reports suggest that Mamata Banerjee has urged several of the rebel MLAs to participate in the meeting. However, several newly elected MLAs remained absent in the similar meetings after the party's humiliating defeat in the assembly polls.

In their letter to the speaker, the MLAs recognised Mamata Banerjee as the party chief and urged her to guide them. However, most of them have clarified that they do not want party MP Abhishek Banerjee's interruption in the legislative affairs. Apart from this, several leaders also opposed the interference of the political advisory firm I-PAC in the party's decisions.

Mamata Banerjee, facing probably the toughest times of her political career, can challenge Ritabrata's appointment as the LoP in the court. Apart from this, the TMC can also expel these rebel MLAs under the party guidelines. However, it will reduce the total tally of MLAs to just 22, taking away the official status of the opposition party.

The TMC has hinted that the organisational structure of the party will completely change in the coming days. Earlier on Thurday, senior party leader Krishna Chakraborty on Thursday resigned as the mayor of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation, citing personal reasons.

This came a day after reports claimed that Mamata Banerjee's aide and former Bengal minister, Firhad Hakim, tendered his resignation as the mayor of Kolkata.
