Tripura Communal Clash:  Internet services have been suspended, and prohibitory measures have been imposed in the Unakoti district of Tripura after a clash over the collection of local fair subscription turned communal on Saturday. At least six people were injured, and several homes were burnt down.

In view of tension in the areas, the administration has deployed a large contingent of security forces, mobile internet services have been suspended across the Kumarghat Sub-Division for 48 hours, and Central forces have conducted flag marches in the area.

The dispute took a communal turn, and the clash resulted in incidents of arson and vandalism. At least eight have been arrested after several properties were damaged and multiple homes set on fire.

What Happened In Unakoti On Saturday

According to police, the violence erupted on Saturday when a group of individuals stopped a timber-laden vehicle at Saidarpar village under Fatikroy police station limits and demanded a subscription for a community fair. This sparked an argument between two groups, which quickly turned into communal clashes.

Tensions intensified after a family from one community in the Shimultala area reportedly refused to contribute. Following this, a mob from the other community assembled and set fire to properties, including a timber shop, while also vandalising a place of worship. Police sources stated that retaliation soon took place.

As the situation worsened, reports emerged of arson, vandalism, and damage to properties, including harm to a place of worship, according to police sources.

To restore law and order, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Kumarghat imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
