Jagran Correspondent, Haldwani: In a case of cyber fraud, a young man from Banbhoolpura in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani lost money from his bank account despite neither clicking on any suspicious link nor sharing his One Time Password OTP with anyone. Shockingly, fraudulent transactions continued even when his mobile phone was switched off, draining his account and causing severe mental distress. Although he approached the police for help, the mystery behind the unauthorised withdrawals remains unsolved.

The man, who is a resident of Indiranagar Noori Masjid, stated in a complaint filed at the Banbhoolpura police station that he had switched off his mobile phone and gone to sleep on the night of May 24. When he turned on his mobile the next morning, he received a series of OTP messages. It turned out that a message from the BookMyShow app appeared on his phone using his SBI credit card, showing a transaction of Rs 1 lakh. He filed a complaint on the cybercrime portal regarding this.
Then, on the night of May 31, suspicious transactions were made from his various bank accounts and credit cards, including withdrawals of Rs 90,000 from another credit card, approximately Rs 28,000 from his SBI credit card through various transactions, Rs 29,900 from his Axis Bank account, and Rs 1,000 from his SBI account. He said he received messages about credit card withdrawals, but received no messages about withdrawals from his bank accounts.
He then submitted copies of his bank statements, message screenshots, and cyber complaints to the police, demanding the money be returned and strict action against the culprits. Cyber Superintendent Amit Kumar said that if suspicious activity is noticed in your bank account, immediately file a complaint on the 1930 helpline, further advising people to install only authorised apps on your mobile phone.
