Uttarakhand News: The weather across the state is expected to remain dry on Thursday and Friday, according to meteorological officials. However, conditions are likely to change again from Saturday, with fresh weather activity expected.

Despite a calm end to the week, January has recorded higher-than-normal rainfall due to increased western disturbance activity in the latter part of the month.

Late Activation Of Western Disturbances

Western disturbances remained weak during the first three months of the winter season. As a result, temperatures in the plains began to rise from mid-January. The situation changed in the final week of the month when western disturbances became active twice.

This led to widespread snowfall in the mountainous regions and heavy rainfall in the Terai-Bhabar belt. The shift in weather also brought a noticeable drop in temperatures across several areas.

January Rainfall Above Normal

A monthly report released by the Meteorological Centre confirmed that the state recorded 13 per cent more rainfall than the monthly average for January.

The normal rainfall for January stands at 38 mm, but the state received 42.8 mm following two days of widespread showers.

District-Wise Rainfall Pattern

Bageshwar recorded the highest rainfall in the state. The district received 72.2 mm of rain against a normal average of 31.6 mm, which is nearly two-and-a-half times higher than usual.

Nainital also saw significantly higher rainfall. The district recorded 58.6 mm, compared to the normal 30.6 mm.

Pithoragarh, which usually receives the highest average rainfall of 43.9 mm, recorded 34.5 mm this month, around 21 per cent below normal.

Tehri received 35.1 mm of rainfall against the expected 42.3 mm.

Cold Conditions Continue

Meteorological officials said the recent change in weather has intensified cold conditions across the state, especially in the hills. Further updates are expected as weather systems develop over the weekend.
