West Bengal Budget 2026: The West Bengal government presented the annual state budget in the legislative assembly on Thursday. With the assembly polls knocking at the doorsteps, this will be the final budget of the third term of the Trinamool (TMC) government and could be a game-changer for Mamata Banerjee's government, powering them for a fourth term. The budget was presented in front of the legislative assembly by the state finance minister, Chandrima Bhattacharya. Through the budget, the government is expected to invest around Rs 4.06 lakh crore in the state.

West Bengal Budget 2026: Major Takeaways

  • The state government has announced that under the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme, the beneficiaries will be entitled to an additional Rs 500 per month from February 2026. 
  • This will take the monthly allowance to Rs 1,700 (from Rs 1,200) for women belonging to the reserved categories and Rs 1,500 (from Rs 1,000) for those belonging to the general category.
  • The state government has launched a new scheme, Banglar Yubasathi, to help educated young people aged 21 to 40 (who have passed the class 10 exam) with employment opportunities. As part of this scheme, Rs 1,500 will be given to these youth. 
  • The salary of para-teachers (those employed on a contractual basis) has also been increased by Rs 1,000 in the state budget.
  • The state government has announced the implementation of the seventh pay commission, thereby giving the government employees major relief.
  • The state government has also increased the daily wage of civic volunteers by Rs 1,000. It has also increased the compensation given to the families in case of any inadvertent incident from 3 lakhs to 5 lakhs.
  • The dearance allowance for state government employees has been increased by four per cent, which will be paid out in instalments from April 1.
  • The wages of Anganwadi workers and Anganwari Sahayaks will also be increased by Rs 1,000 from April 2026.
