Bengaluru News: A man in Bengaluru has claimed that he was denied rental accommodation multiple times because of his religion. Mohammed Sanjeed, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, said that house owners rejected him after learning he was a Muslim.

Sanjeed, who is planning to get married soon, had been looking for a two-bedroom flat in popular Bengaluru areas like Indiranagar and Koramangala. On May 24, he posted on social media platform X, asking for help in finding a suitable flat.

However, two days later, he shared a follow-up post expressing his disappointment. “Saw around four places with brokers. At the end of the day, the broker says ‘sorry, owners are not okay with Muslims, due to Pakistan issues,’” he wrote.

Upset by the response, he questioned the city's attitude. “What is this nonsense? What parts of Bengaluru are not Islamophobic? Will try searching there,” he added. In another post, he hinted at moving abroad, saying, “Or just leave Bengaluru altogether, maybe move to Dubai or something.”

His posts received widespread attention online, with several users offering support and suggesting areas that might be more welcoming. One user recommended places like Queens Road, Shivaji Nagar, Cox Town and Richmond, mentioning that Muslim tenants often face fewer problems in those locations.

Sanjeed’s experience comes at a time when tensions between India and Pakistan have been high. Following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam in April, India launched a military operation against terror camps across the border. Despite a ceasefire being declared on May 10, relations remain tense, with both sides maintaining regular contact through military channels.
