When we hear of spinal deformities such as scoliosis we tend to relate them with posture problems or back pain. What most individuals do not know is that neglecting scoliosis can cause severe respiratory issues. The spine has a critical function in keeping the lungs operational and any irregular curvature may pressurise the chest cavity, thus causing the lungs to be unable to expand completely. With time, this can lead to breathing problems, lower oxygen levels and even permanent lung damage.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Ashish Dagar, Consultant - Spine Surgery, Manipal Hospital Gurugram explained about scoliosis.

What exactly is scoliosis?

Scoliosis refers to a curvature of the spine sideways, in an "S" or "C" pattern. Scoliosis can develop at any age but is typically found in teenagers. Mild scoliosis may not necessarily manifest with noticeable symptoms but extreme cases can contribute to chronic back pain, asymmetrical shoulders and compromised lung capacity. As the curvature becomes worse, it can shift the rib position, decreasing lung capacity and causing shortness of breath. In certain cases, scoliosis will also impact the heart while resulting in decreased blood flow and fatigue.

Signs One Should Watch Out For-

  • Uneven shoulders or hips
  • One shoulder blade sticks out more
  • A curve in the spine
  • Trouble breathing, especially when active
  • Back pain
  • Waist looks uneven
  • One may also feel fatigued a lot, find it difficult to move their back or have changes in their posture.

Treatment

In severe cases where scoliosis impacts breathing, mobility or quality of life, surgery might be required. Spinal fusion surgery is among the most effective types of surgery used to treat serious scoliosis. During this procedure, the curved vertebrae are corrected and joined together with metal rods, screws and bone grafts to prevent curvature from recurring. The fused bones become a single solid piece over time, restoring spinal stability and lung function.
