Identifying cancer at an early stage is one of the most effective strategies for improving survival rates and treatment success. When detected early, cancer is typically localized which allows for less invasive treatment options. There are various subtle early indicators of cancer such as unexplained weight loss and ongoing fatigue that require attention. Being aware of these warning signs helps people seek medical attention quickly, leading to faster diagnoses and more treatment options.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr. Mohit Saxena, Consultant & Head Of Department (HOD) - Medical Oncology, Manipal Hospital, Gurugram listed five major indications of cancer that one shouldn't avoid.
Indications Of Cancer
Alterations In Skin
Numerous changes can be seen on the skin as a result of cancer. For instance, the presence of swelling or lumps in the urinary tract or reproductive areas may suggest genitourinary cancers such as prostate or testicular cancer in men or breast cancer which can occur in both women and though rarely, men. The presence of new bumps, freckles, moles or warts which can vary in size, colour and shape may be indicative of skin cancer. Additionally, a shift in the skin's undertone to a yellowish tint while often associated with jaundice can also be a sign of pancreatic cancer.
Unexplained Bruising Or Bleeding
The presence of bruising or bleeding without a clear cause is a concern. Additionally, symptoms such as blood in the stool or urine accompanied by vomiting or coughing up blood are serious indications. Unusual vaginal bleeding that occurs besides regular menstrual periods after sexual activity or after menopause also needs to be checked.
Changes In Bowel Habits
There may be persistent symptoms such as constipation or diarrhoea for several weeks along with painful or frequent urination and bowel movements which can signal a potential health issue. Alterations in bowel patterns might suggest the possibility of colon or stomach cancer. Similarly, irregularities in urination like discomfort, heightened frequency, or a weak urine stream could indicate a urinary tract infection, an enlarged prostate or even point toward prostate or bladder cancers.
Severe Fatigue
This kind of fatigue differs from the typical tiredness experienced after a long workday. Severe fatigue that persists despite sufficient rest may indicate an early stage of cancer. The disease consumes the body's nutrients to fuel its growth and multiplication, resulting in a depletion of essential resources. Consequently, the body's nutrient levels are not adequately restored, leading to exhaustion.
Digestive Complications
There are varied types of cancer including brain, ovarian and oesophageal cancers which can lead to difficulties with eating, swallowing and experiencing pain during meals as well as irregular appetite. These challenges may result in symptoms such as nausea, bloating, indigestion and vomiting.
