Summer brings with it sun-soaked days, sweaty skin and, unfortunately for many, a surge in acne and oiliness. The rise in temperatures causes the sebaceous glands to produce more oil, which can clog pores, trap dirt, and result in breakouts. Add to this the increased humidity and exposure to pollution and UV rays and make the skin woes worse. For those with oily or acne-prone skin, summer can feel like an ongoing battle against greasiness, inflammation and stubborn pimples.
However, with the right skincare routine, it’s possible to keep acne and excess oil under control. By making simple yet effective changes to the daily skincare regimen, such as choosing lightweight products, cleansing correctly, and nourishing your skin without over-stripping it, people can enjoy a healthy, clear summer glow. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr. Aashna Kanchwala, Celebrity Cosmetologist & Aesthetic Physician, shares the right summer skincare routine to keep acne and oil at bay in summer.

Cleanse, But Don’t Overdo It
Washing your face seems like the obvious first step, and it is. But don’t go overboard. Washing too often strips away natural oils, which makes your skin panic and produce more oil. Twice a day is enough.
Use a gentle, gel-based face wash. If you can find one with tea tree, salicylic acid, or neem, great. These ingredients help clear excess oil, unclog pores, and calm active breakouts. And whatever you do, avoid foamy or harsh face washes that leave your skin feeling tight.

Toner
Toners have come a long way from the alcohol-based ones that used to sting. Today, a good toner is your best friend, especially if you’re dealing with open pores or red patches. Look for a calming toner. Something with witch hazel, cucumber, green tea or rose water works well. Pat it on gently after cleansing. Don’t rub. This helps rebalance your skin and prepares it to absorb moisturiser better.
Moisturiser Is Not Optional
Here’s the biggest myth around oily skin: “I don’t need moisturiser.” Wrong. When you skip moisturiser, your skin produces more oil to compensate. Go for a lightweight gel moisturiser. Aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, and cica are excellent ingredients to look for. These hydrate your skin without making it greasy or clogging your pores.

Sunscreen Every Single Day
This one’s not up for debate. Sunscreen protects your skin from UV damage, prevents acne scars from getting darker, and keeps sensitivity in check. Pick a sunscreen that’s oil-free and mattifying. Gel-based ones are ideal for oily skin. Make sure it says SPF 30 or higher and offers broad-spectrum protection (UVA + UVB). Apply it at the end of your skincare routine and reapply if you’re outdoors for long.
Freshen Up Without Wiping Everything Off
Midday oiliness? Totally normal. Carry blotting papers or soft tissues in your bag. Dab—not rub—your face when it starts to feel too shiny. If needed, spritz a mild, alcohol-free face mist to refresh your skin.
Weekly Mask
Once or twice a week, use a clay-based mask to draw out excess oil and impurities. Bentonite or kaolin clay works great. Even Multani Mitti is a great traditional option. Apply for 10–15 minutes and rinse off gently.

You don’t need an elaborate, ten-step routine. Just stick to products that suit your skin and keep things consistent. Cleanse, tone, moisturise, protect, and treat; simple as that. Let your skin breathe, and treat it with kindness. It’s working hard to protect you every day; return the favour with care, not harshness.
