1. Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh is a high-altitude cold desert. Visit this place for tan mountains, whitewashed Buddhist monasteries, and tiny hamlets, which feel much like the Tibetan plateau.

- Best Time To Visit: May to October (roads are open and the weather is manageable). Winter is possible but harsh and mostly for experienced travellers.

- How To Reach: Fly to Bhuntar (Kullu) or Chandigarh, then drive. I usually take the Shimla-Kinnaur route, which is usually open year-round. The Manali route via Atal Tunnel and Kunzum La is seasonal.

- Ideal Trip Duration: 5-7 days

- What To See: Key Monastery, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim post office, Dhankar, Tabo, Pin Valley, Chandratal Lake

- One Practical Travel Tip: Most of Spiti sits above 3,500 m, so spend a night or two to settle into the new weather and don't rush. ATMs and fuel are limited, so carry cash and top up your tank whenever you can

Pro Tip: Bring a portable power bank; the altitude kills batteries faster than you can say 'Himalayas'.

2. Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu

Dhanushkodi, Tamil Nadu, is known as a ghost town at the tip of Rameswaram island, with a wrecked church, empty sandbars, and the sea on both sides. It looks more like a remote Mediterranean coast than the Indian mainland.

- Best Time To Visit: December to March (cooler, calmer seas). October to November can bring heavy rain and cyclones

- How To Reach: Rameswaram has a railhead, and the nearest major airport is Madurai (about 170 km). Dhanushkodi is roughly 20 km beyond Rameswaram, via the Pamban Bridge

- Ideal Trip Duration: 2 days (Rameswaram plus Dhanushkodi)

- What To See: Ruined church and railway station, Arichal Munai point, Ramanathaswamy Temple, Pamban Bridge, Kalam Memorial

- One Practical Travel Tip: Plan to be done by late afternoon, as visits after dark are often discouraged by residents and there is no accommodation at the point. Wear a hat and carry water, because there is almost no shade.

Additionally the place should be avoided in dark and only be visited in daylight with utmost safety.

3. Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is a coral atoll with shallow, glass-clear turquoise lagoons and white sand; it looks more like a part of the Maldives than mainland India.

- Best Time To Visit: October to May (calm seas, good for diving). June to September is monsoon, and many services slow down

- How To Reach: Fly from Kochi to Agatti, or take a passenger ship from Kochi (about 14-20 hours depending on the island). An entry permit is mandatory for visitors.

- Ideal Trip Duration: 4-6 days

- What To See: Agatti and Bangaram lagoons, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Minicoy lighthouse. Snorkelling, scuba diving, and kayaking.

- One Practical Travel Tip: Arrange your permit well ahead, as tourist numbers are controlled. Most visitors book through Lakshadweep Tourism or authorised operators. Alcohol is generally not available, except in a few designated resorts.

4. Nubra Valley, Ladakh

Nubra Valley in Ladakh is a dune area at Hunder with double-humped Bactrian camels, set against snow-capped peaks. The place does feel like Central Asia.

- Best Time To Visit: May to September (Khardung La is open and the weather is warmest)

- How To Reach: Fly to Leh, then drive 5-6 hours via Khardung La, one of the world's highest motorable roads. Indian visitors need an Inner Line Permit, available online or through local operators.

- Ideal Trip Duration: 2-3 nights in Nubra (plus Leh time)

- What To See: Hunder dunes, Diskit Monastery and its Maitreya Buddha statue, Panamik hot springs, Turtuk.

- One Practical Travel Tip: Spend at least 2 days in Leh before heading up to adjust to the altitude. Only postpaid mobile connections work in Ladakh, so sort that out before you go.

5. Meghalaya

Meghalaya features rain-soaked green hills, living root bridges grown by hand, and waterfalls tumbling out of clouds. It feels like a tropical Southeast Asian highland.

- Best Time To Visit: October to April for clear skies and the best views at places like Dawki. June to September gives roaring waterfalls but also landslides and travel delays.

- How To Reach: Fly to Guwahati (Assam), then drive about 3 hours to Shillong. Shared cabs and buses run regularly.

- Ideal Trip Duration: 4-5 days.

- What To See: Double-decker living root bridge (Nongriat), Dawki and Umngot River, Mawlynnong, Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Caves, Laitlum Canyon.

- One Practical Travel Tip: The Nongriat trek involves around 3,000 steps each way, so start early, wear grippy shoes, and travel light. Carry cash, as many villages have no card or UPI support.
