Hepatitis or liver inflammation tends to start quietly with loose, non-specific symptoms that can be easily brushed aside. It poses a significant global health concern, infecting millions worldwide. This inflammatory liver disease can lead to severe complications including liver scarring, cirrhosis and even cancer. If left untreated, hepatitis can cause chronic liver damage, impairing the organ's ability to filter toxins and perform vital functions.
In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Anukalp Prakash - Director - Gastroenterology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram shared signs of hepatitis that people often ignore.
Initial Symptoms Of Hepatitis
1. Unexplained Tiredness- One of the most frequent yet unnoticed signs is ongoing exhaustion. When the liver is not working properly, the body must exert more effort to compensate for the lack of energy, and thus people experience constant fatigue.
2. Loss Of Appetite And Nausea- Loss of appetite with nausea can be subtle signs, but they are possible manifestations of liver inflammation.
3. Mild Abdominal Discomfort- Abdominal discomfort or a dull pain in the upper right quadrant of the belly — where the liver resides — is another subtle symptom. It might not be severe but should not be taken lightly if long-standing.
4. Dark Urine And Pale Stools- If the liver is not functioning well, the creation and removal of bile are impacted. The urine will darken and become pale, and stools turn pale — both indicators of hepatitis.
5. Yellowing Of The Eyes Or Skin (Jaundice)- Usually thought of as a more progressed symptom, jaundice can start subtly and get overlooked in its early stages. It's important to move fast if any yellowing is observed.

6. Joint Pain Or Flu-Like Illness- Initial-stage hepatitis can feel like a viral illness with joint pain, low-grade fever, and body aches. Most people think it's just the flu and don't get further tested.
Keep in mind that hepatitis has viral (such as Hepatitis A, B or C), alcoholic or autoimmune causes. If you experience any of these symptoms listed above particularly if they have been present for a while — don't hesitate to see a doctor.
