Mumbai News: A rise in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China has led Maharashtra's health department to issue a precautionary advisory. The Union health ministry is closely monitoring the situation and receiving updates from the World Health Organization (WHO).
HMPV is a common respiratory virus that causes infections similar to the common cold, primarily affecting young children, the elderly and individuals with weakened immune systems, particularly in winter. It poses a serious risk to those who are immunocompromised.

The Times of India report quoted Dr. Lancelot Pinto, a pulmonologist at PD Hinduja Hospital, stating that cases of HMPV are not uncommon in India. However, testing for the virus is typically conducted only when a patient shows significant symptoms, as the testing costs can be quite high, ranging from Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000. The state health department reviewed data on respiratory infections and noted that there has been no increase in HMPV cases from December 2023 to December 2024.

HMPV Preventive Measures
The advisory encourages people to cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing, wash their hands frequently with soap and avoid crowded places if they exhibit symptoms. Health department officials reassured the public that there is no immediate cause for concern regarding the HMPV situation in China. They are working closely with the National Centre for Disease Control and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to monitor developments.
Dr Pinto stated that while HMPV is not as easily transmissible as Covid-19, it is essential for individuals to take precautions when feeling unwell to protect others, particularly teaching children these habits early on.
