The parents of a nine-year-old boy from Shahapur in the Thane district of Maharashtra have filed a police complaint alleging that doctors at a government-run hospital operated on his private part rather than his broken leg.
A health authority promised an investigation into the incident after they made their accusation, and the police stated they were conducting one.
The minor’s parents said, “The boy suffered an injury on his leg while he was playing with his friends last month. He was admitted to the sub-district hospital in Shahapur on June 15 and was undergoing treatment. The doctors recently performed a circumcision surgery on his private part instead of the injured leg.”
The doctors then told reporters that they operated on his wounded leg shortly after realising their mistake.
In addition, the parents complained to the Shahapur police department. A police officer stated that a probe into the allegation was in progress, although no case has been filed in this regard as of yet.
According to Dr Kailas Pawar, the district civil surgeon, the health authorities would look into the claims.
In addition to his leg injury, Gajendra Pawar, the hospital's medical officer, informed reporters that the youngster also suffered from phimosis (tight foreskin).
"We had to carry out two operations,” he said.
Regarding notifying the parents of the second surgery, he said that either the doctors had neglected to do so or had told the patient's other relatives. "What the doctors did was right and there was nothing wrong in it. But the parents refused to accept the explanation given by the doctors," Pawar said.
