Nageshwar Nath Temple Ayodhya: Interesting Facts And History Of This Temple

- Legend Behind Origin Of The Temple - The son of Lord Rama, Kush, is credited with founding this shrine. Kush bathed in the holy Sarayu River and lost his armlet. In the Sarayu River, a Naga-kanya by the name of Kumudini discovered this armlet. After accepting the armlet, she left for the nagaloka. Upon learning of this, Kush grew enraged and resolved to eliminate the nagas.

For 25,000 years, he attacked and engaged in combat with them. After this battle, the nagas were worn out and restless, so they prayed to Lord Shiva for protection and blessings. Lord Shiva appeared where Kush was battling the nagas and resolved the matter, moved by the nagas' petitions. Kush then asked Lord Shiva to take the form of a Shivalinga and remain here. This wish came true.

Later, after getting married to the Naga-Kanya, Kush built a temple that became known as the temple of Nageshwar Nath. The Shivalinga's name originates from the fact that the nagas are followers of Lord Shiva, who has come to their aid. When King Vikramaditya brought Ayodhya back to life, he also brought this shrine back to life. In 1750 CE, Naval Rai, the minister of Safdarjung, built the current temple edifice.

- The Idol Of Lord Nageshwar Nath - Every day, Lord Nageshwar Nath is lavishly worshipped with offerings of bilva leaves, flowers, milk, water, etc. Lord Shiva is immensely fond of bilva leaves. Lord Ganesha's golden-coloured deity is seated across from Lord Nageshwar Nath, facing him. In addition, Lord Nageshwar Nath is enshrined opposite three medium-sized Deities of Nandi, the head of Lord Shiva's ganas.

- Significance Of Lord Nageshwar Nath - According to the scriptures, Lord Shiva is constantly in meditation on Lord Rama's sacred names. It follows that the appearance of Lord Nageshwar Nath at Lord Rama's own home is not unexpected. When Kush defeated the nagas in the Lila, his wish to live in Ayodhya was realised. Due to his proximity to the hallowed Sarayu River, Lord Nageshwar Nath feels fortunate to be able to take his holy bath in the same spot where Lord Rama formerly took a daily dip.
