Many seekers practising Japa (chanting) use a Japa mala, a string of 108 beads, to anchor their mind during mantra meditation. Rooted in Vedic scriptures, Japa mala serves as a spiritual accessory and a powerful tool for focus and discipline in sadhna (spiritual practice).
Let's understand in detail what Japa Mala means, what its benefits are, and why it holds importance in spiritual practices.
What Is A Japa Mala?
Japa mala, also known as prayer mala, is a set of beads commonly used by Hindus and Buddhists for meditation and spiritual practices. 'Japa' is a Sanskrit word which means a prayer involving the recital of mantras, and 'mala' means garland.
These beads are made from spiritually significant materials like Rudraksha beads, tulsi wood, sphatik beads and many more. Each material is believed to carry divine energy.
Since ancient times, Japa malas have been used by sages, yogis and Buddhists for performing spiritual practices.
