Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh secured a silver medal in the men's 1500m final with a personal best effort of 3:36.72 at the Asian Games here on Monday.
Gulveer, who had already won a silver in the 10,000m in the ongoing edition, finished behind gold medallist Kazuto Iizawa of Japan, while compatriot Nagiya Mori won the bronze with an effort of 3:37.92.
The other Indian, Yoonus Shah, finished ninth with an effort of 3:43.88.
Earlier, Vithya Ramraj clinched a bronze medal in the women's 400m hurdles event but long-distance runner Avinash Sable failed to defend his gold medal, finishing fourth in the men''s 3000m steeplechase final.
Vithya clocked an impressive 54.75 seconds in the final to finish third and secure a podium finish for India.
Her performance also saw her surpass the previous national record associated with PT Usha, which had stood for nearly four decades.
UAE’s Mariam Kareem clinched the gold medal after clocking 54.31s, while Kazakhstan’s Adelina Zems finished second with a time of 54.58s.
Vithya Ramraj started the race well and tried to maintain a uniform speed throughout. She tried to grab the gold but failed to produce the extra speed in the final moments and had to settle for the bronze.
Vithya Ramraj Breaks PT Usha’s Long-Standing National Record
Vithya produced a strong run in the final and stayed in medal contention throughout the race. She was eventually edged out by Kareem and Zems, but her 54.75-second effort was enough to secure bronze.
More importantly, the performance allowed Vithya to better the national record that she had jointly held with PT Usha.
The Indian athlete's latest achievement adds another major milestone to her career, with the 400m hurdles proving to be another memorable event for the Indian contingent at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
Kareem, meanwhile, produced the fastest run of the race and also broke the Asian Games record with her 54.31-second effort.
The final standings were:
Gold: Mariam Kareem (UAE) – 54.31s
Silver: Adelina Zems (Kazakhstan) – 54.58s
Bronze:Vithya Ramraj (India) – 54.75s

Anu Raghavan Finishes Fifth With Personal Best
India also had Anu Raghavan competing in the women's 400m hurdles final.
Raghavan finished fifth but ended her race on a positive note by recording a personal best of 55.88 seconds.
Despite missing out on the podium, her performance marked another significant achievement as she improved her personal best on the Asian Games stage.
