India's medal count at the Commonwealth Games 2026 continued to grow on Sunday as Rishikanta Singh Chanambam secured a silver medal in the men's 60kg weightlifting event.

The 24-year-old came close to winning gold after an impressive display but had to settle for second place with a total lift of 264kg. Malaysia's Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq took the gold with a Games record total of 273kg, while Kenya's Joshua Amunga Mboya finished third with 260kg.

Rishikanta looked in complete control during the snatch. He cleared 116kg and 119kg with confidence before lifting 121kg on his final attempt. The successful lift earned him a new Commonwealth Games snatch record and put him in first place heading into the clean and jerk.

He began the second phase well by lifting 143kg on his opening attempt, keeping himself firmly in the fight for gold. But things became much tougher after that.

The Indian lifter decided to go for 148kg on his second attempt but couldn't complete the lift. That miss allowed Aniq to edge ahead after the Malaysian successfully lifted 149kg.

With the gold medal still within reach, Rishikanta made one last attempt at 151kg. He managed to get the weight onto his shoulders, but the final jerk proved too difficult, ending his hopes of moving back into first place.

Aniq then capped off a brilliant performance by lifting 152kg in his final clean and jerk attempt, setting another Commonwealth Games record and confirming the gold medal.

Although Rishikanta missed out on the top spot, his silver medal was a fine reward for a determined performance. His record-breaking effort in the snatch and strong finish also gave India another valuable medal and a positive start to Day 4 of the competition.
