Cristiano Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from the Portugal camp has raised questions over his relationship with new head coach Jorge Jesus, with reports suggesting the captain felt let down by the manager following a series of events that began with his surprise omission against Norway.

Ronaldo announced on Wednesday that he had left the national team camp, saying his decision came after Jesus’ press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca.

“After the National Team coach’s press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the National Team training camp,” Ronaldo said.

“In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself.”

Where Did The Ronaldo-Jesus Rift Begin?

The situation reportedly began during Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway, when Ronaldo was left on the bench for the entire game.

The 41-year-old had warmed up for around 30 minutes but was ultimately not introduced. Ronaldo was reportedly unhappy with the decision and did not join his teammates in celebrating with the travelling supporters after the final whistle.

The incident itself, however, did not immediately appear to suggest a major breakdown between Ronaldo and Jesus.

Jesus later insisted there was no serious issue between them.

What Happened Behind Closed Doors?

According to Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre, who is a close friend of Ronaldo and spoke about the incident on El Chiringuito, the situation escalated during a private meeting involving Ronaldo, Jesus and FPF president Pedro Proenca.

Aguirre claimed Jesus apologised to Ronaldo for making him warm up for around 30 minutes without eventually bringing him onto the pitch.

More importantly, Aguirre alleged that Jesus promised Ronaldo he would publicly acknowledge his mistake and apologise during his next press conference.

Ronaldo therefore reportedly believed that the disagreement had been resolved. But the events that followed changed the situation.

Why Did Ronaldo Feel Betrayed?

At his next press conference, Jesus did not issue the public apology that Aguirre claimed he had promised.

Instead, the Portugal coach stressed that he remained in charge of team selection and insisted that Ronaldo was being treated like any other player.

That reportedly made Ronaldo angry. Aguirre said Ronaldo felt “betrayed” because of the difference between what he had allegedly been told privately and what Jesus subsequently said publicly.

It was after this press conference that Ronaldo decided to leave the Portugal camp.

What Did Jorge Jesus Say?

Jesus has rejected the idea that Ronaldo refused to train or that there was a major confrontation between the two.

“Cristiano Ronaldo did not refuse to train,” Jesus said.

“There are no issues. Cristiano told me: if you want me to play, I’ll play. If you want me to sit on the bench, I will. If you want me in the stands, I will.”

Jesus had also said that he had no problem with Ronaldo and that team selection was his responsibility. Reports subsequently said Ronaldo was not going to start Portugal’s next match either.

So, Why Did Ronaldo Leave?

Ronaldo was reportedly frustrated after warming up for around half an hour without being used. According to Aguirre, the subsequent private meeting appeared to settle the matter, with Jesus allegedly apologising and promising to address the situation publicly.

When that public apology did not materialise, Ronaldo reportedly felt that the understanding reached privately had been broken.
