India's hopes in the men's 100m sprint came to an early end at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after Gurindervir Singh crashed out in the men's 100m heats after clocking 10.39 seconds in Glasgow.The 25-year-old Punjab sprinter finished 28th overall in the opening round, falling well short of the qualification mark and bringing his campaign to an early end.
Coming into the Games with high expectations after rewriting the national record earlier this year, Gurindervir was expected to produce a good result. However, he was unable to replicate his best form on the Commonwealth stage.

Gurindervir Singh Falls Short In Men's 100m Heats
Running in Heat 4 from lane five, Gurindervir got off to a promising start and remained in contention alongside Jamaica's Rohan Watson through the early stages of the race. However, the Indian sprinter faded over the final 30-35 metres as Watson pulled away to claim victory in 10.13 seconds.
Gurindervir crossed the finish line in 10.39 seconds, placing second in his heat but only 28th overall across all competitors. Watson's time saw him finish ninth overall and qualify for Tuesday's semifinals.
A total of 17 athletes progressed from the opening round, while seven sprinters had already secured automatic byes, leaving Gurindervir outside the qualification places.
National Record Holder Unable To Perform
The race was contested with a legal tailwind of 1.5 m/s, conditions that generally favour faster sprint times. Despite the assistance, Gurindervir could not improve on his season's best performance.
His 10.39-second effort was significantly slower than the 10.09-second national record he produced at the Federation Cup in Ranchi earlier this year.
That landmark run made him the first Indian sprinter to break the 10.10-second barrier, raising hopes that he could eventually become the country's first athlete to dip below the coveted 10-second mark.
Instead, Glasgow proved to be a frustrating outing as he struggled to reproduce the speed that established him as India's premier male sprinter.

Ghanaian Duo Lead the Qualifiers
The heats were dominated by Ghana's sprint stars, with Benjamin Azamati posting the fastest qualifying time of 10.00 seconds, closely followed by compatriot Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, who clocked 10.01 seconds.
Their performances underlined the high standard of competition in the men's 100m, where even small margins proved decisive in the race for semifinal places.
Focus Turns to Future Competitions
Although Gurindervir's Commonwealth Games campaign ended sooner than expected, the national record holder remains one of India's brightest sprinting talents. The 25-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season and will now look to bounce back in upcoming international competitions.
