India scripted a memorable chapter in Commonwealth Games history on Monday night as Sharmila Dhankar clinched the country's first-ever para athletics gold medal, while Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla added a bronze in the women's Shot Put F57 final at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.

The historic double podium not only ended India's 20-year wait for a para athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games but also marked the first time India has won two medals in the same para athletics event at the quadrennial spectacle.

Sharmila Ends 20-Year Wait With Historic Gold

Sharmila delivered a season-best throw of 9.81m to secure the gold medal and create history for Indian para sports. The 40-year-old became India's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medallist in para athletics and also the first Indian woman to win a para athletics medal at the Games.

Her triumph was the culmination of years of perseverance. After finishing fourth at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Sharmila returned stronger and produced her best performance on one of the biggest stages in world sport.

The achievement also adds to an impressive year for the veteran, who had earlier won gold at the Fazza International Para Athletics Championships.

Shilpa Upgraded to Bronze After Dramatic Review

India's celebrations doubled after Shilpa Kanchugarakoppalu Shyla was elevated to the bronze medal following a successful protest by the Indian contingent.

Shyla had initially finished fourth despite recording a personal-best throw of 7.26m. Nigeria's Eucharia Iyiazi was originally awarded the bronze medal, but an official review later ruled her only valid attempt a foul, resulting in the Nigerian athlete being removed from the podium.

The revised standings saw Shyla promoted to third place, sparking emotional celebrations. The Indian thrower was visibly overwhelmed as she embraced Sharmila after the decision was confirmed.

While the result stands for now, reports suggest the Nigerian team could file a counter-protest.

A Landmark Day for Indian Para Athletics

The F57 category is contested by athletes with lower-limb impairments, limb deficiencies, or reduced muscle power. Sharmila's journey makes the achievement even more inspiring.

She was affected by polio in her left leg at the age of two but has gone on to become one of India's finest para athletes through years of dedication and determination.

With Sharmila's historic gold and Shilpa's bronze, India not only secured its first para athletics medals in two decades but also achieved an unprecedented feat by placing two athletes on the podium in the same event.

National record holder Sarvesh Kushare added to India's memorable day by becoming the first Indian to win a silver medal in the men's high jump at the Commonwealth Games. The 31-year-old cleared 2.25m to finish second, while Jamaica's Romaine Beckford claimed gold. His silver further boosted India's athletics medal haul at CWG 2026.
