The FIFA World Cup 2026 is already creating history. The tournament has become the fastest World Cup in the modern era to reach the 100-goal mark, achieving the milestone in just 33 matches.

Mexico's Julian Quinones scored the first goal of the tournament in his team's 2-0 victory over South Africa on June 12. The 100th goal came during the Netherlands' dominant 5-1 win over Sweden, with Cody Gakpo finding the back of the net to complete the landmark moment.

What was the previous best record?

Reaching 100 goals in only 33 matches is the quickest the tournament has achieved this feat in the last 68 years. The previous best was 36 matches, recorded in the 1982 and 2014 editions. The 1978 and 1994 World Cups took 38 matches to reach the same milestone. The overall record, however, still belongs to the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, where more than 100 goals were scored in just 20 matches.

The Netherlands also celebrated a special achievement during their win over Sweden. They became only the eighth nation in FIFA World Cup history to score 100 goals in the tournament.

The Dutch side made a perfect start to the match. Brian Brobbey opened the scoring inside the first five minutes after finishing a fine cross from Cody Gakpo. He then scored again in the 17th minute, and that goal turned out to be the Netherlands' 100th goal in FIFA World Cup history.

Another major milestone was reached during the Group F clash between Japan and Tunisia at Monterrey Stadium. The match became the 1,000th game ever played in FIFA World Cup history.

FIFA marked the occasion by highlighting the significance of the achievement. The governing body said the landmark match reflects the long history of the tournament and football's unique ability to bring people, communities, and nations together.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, being held across North America, features 48 teams for the first time. The teams are divided into 12 groups, with the top two sides from each group automatically qualifying for the knockout stage. They will be joined by the eight best third-placed teams to complete the round of 32 lineup.
