Portugal answered every question that followed their frustrating draw with Congo DR, and once again it was five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo who delivered when all eyes were on him.

The veteran forward struck twice, created another goal through his intelligence, and shattered multiple FIFA World Cup records as Portugal thrashed Uzbekistan 5-0 at Houston Stadium. Over the years, we have seen the former Real Madrid forward silencing his doubters after his critics, and it was no different this time.

Ronaldo Leads Portugal to Victory

After being held to a frustrating draw by DR Congo in their opening Group K fixture, questions had been raised about both Ronaldo and Roberto Martinez's side.

Those doubts were definitely silenced in Houston as the Portugal captain scored twice and played a pivotal role in a dominant victory that sent the Selecao to the top of Group K alongside Colombia.

After watching Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland dominate the headlines during the opening week of the tournament, Ronaldo ensured his name returned to centre stage.

The 41-year-old needed only six minutes to announce his arrival, finishing brilliantly from close range after Joao Cancelo's inviting cross. It was a brilliant move from the right flank, and Ronaldo showed his class with his one-touch finishing.

The goal sparked wild celebrations inside Houston Stadium and visibly lifted a Portugal side determined to respond after their disappointing opener.

Ronaldo's influence extended beyond the score sheet. With Portugal awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position, many expected the captain to take responsibility. Instead, he cleverly acted as a dummy, allowing Nuno Mendes to catch the Uzbekistan defence off guard and fire home Portugal's second.

The Selecao were firmly in control, and Ronaldo struck again just before half-time. Bruno Fernandes launched a swift counter-attack and the veteran forward timed his run perfectly before calmly finding the bottom corner to put Portugal three goals clear.

Uzbekistan, who scored their first-ever World Cup goal against Colombia, thought they had another memorable moment when Azizjon Ganiev found the net from a distance. However, the effort was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

Portugal continued their dominance after the break. The unfortunate Utkir Nematov turned the ball into his own net on the hour mark before substitute Rafael Leao added a fifth late on to complete a memorable evening for Roberto Martinez's men.

The result leaves Portugal and Colombia level on four points in Group K, while Uzbekistan's hopes of progressing now hang by a thread.

"This was the response we had in the dressing room. There are times when you need a game like the first one to grow in the tournament. Today we saw a team with the same attitude and commitment, but with greater maturity because it was no longer the opening match. I'm very pleased with the result," stated Portugal coach Roberto Martinez.

Ronaldo Enters The Record Books Again

Ronaldo's opening strike was one of the most significant goals in FIFA World Cup history. The Portugal captain became the first player ever to score in six different FIFA World Cups, moving ahead of Lionel Messi, who had previously shared the record with five editions.

His brace also took him to 10 World Cup goals, surpassing legendary forward Eusebio's tally of nine to become Portugal's all-time leading scorer at the tournament.

At 41 years and 138 days, Ronaldo also became the second-oldest goal scorer in FIFA World Cup history, behind only Cameroon's Roger Milla.

The veteran's performance was a reminder that, despite fierce competition from Messi, Mbappe and Haaland, he remains capable of delivering on football's biggest stage.

Ronaldo was happy with his performance as well as his sides. The Portuguese captain said, "I'm very happy. But for me, the most important thing is our work and the confidence we showed. The team performed really well and improved a lot. Obviously, speaking personally, records are always nice, but my goal is always to help the national team achieve its objectives."
