For FIFA World Cup 2026 debutants Cabo Verde, it was a night to remember as they produced a heroic performance to hold former world champions Spain to a stunning 0-0 draw in their opening Group H encounter on Sunday.

Spain continued the second half with greater urgency, but Cabo Verde continued to stand firm. Fabian Ruiz wasted a glorious opportunity after the restart when he skied a shot. Spain could have been 1-0 up if Ruiz had kept a cool head and placed the ball in the net. Spain’s attacking mindset remained inconsistent against a well-organised opponent.
Seeking a breakthrough, De la Fuente introduced Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal in the 71st minute. The winger immediately added pace and creativity to Spain’s attack, but Cabo Verde’s defence remained composed and continued to keep out every dangerous move.
Spain's best late opportunity fell to Oyarzabal, but the forward failed to hit the target as Cabo Verde completed a defensive masterclass to secure a famous point.
The draw extends Cabo Verde’s amazing defensive record, having already registered seven clean sheets during the qualification campaign.
40-year-old Cabo Verde keeper Vozinha burst into tears after this result.
“We worked a lot for this. We knew we were playing against one of the best national teams in the world, but we also know our quality. We worked a lot for this big day. We knew it was going to be very difficult, but we’re very happy,” said Vozinha after being named the Player of the Match.
Spain midfielder Rodri admitted his side lacked efficiency in front of goal.
He said, “The team tried, I think we had good fluidity. It's about fine-tuning those chances we created, because against a team that sits back so much you're not going to have many, and you know you have to take them. It's that simple.”
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente remained positive despite the disappointing result. “In our heads, there’s positivity and a desire to improve. We should have won today’s match with everything that happened, with all the favourable situations we created, but we lacked freshness and clinical edge. We need to keep growing and gaining rhythm. That’s the big goal in the days we have until the next game,” the tactician said.
