The review of England’s painful loss to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has led to a wave of criticism directed at head coach Thomas Tuchel, as several fans and analysts have blamed him for his defensive strategy in the semifinals.
In any case, Gary Neville, the former England captain, came in support of Tuchel and stated that the head coach’s strategies should be respected, as they are reasonable.
Initially, the Three Lions were looking forward to making history and qualifying for their first World Cup final since 1966, with Anthony Gordon scoring in the second half.

Following the defeat, Tuchel faced heavy backlash for introducing defensive players and asking his side to protect the narrow lead rather than pushing for a second goal. Neville, however, believes the criticism overlooks the circumstances of the match.
"There is no doubt that we all try to win. Every England player I've ever played with and every England player out on the pitch that night was so desperate to bring success to the country from a football perspective. It's not from a lack of want or lack of care," Neville said.
The former Manchester United defender explained that Tuchel's approach was influenced by England's successful defensive display against Mexico earlier in the tournament, where they managed to hold on for victory despite playing with 10 men.
Gary Neville On Thomas Tuchel
"Tuchel chose to try and win the game in the same way he did with 10 men against Mexico, where we were resolute, resilient, tight, compact and got over the line.”
He added, "You can do that with 10 men in Mexico, and we won. He tried to do the same thing by seeing the game out. But the problem was that there was an avalanche of pressure coming towards us with great force. Not just from Messi, Rodrigo De Paul put one in from the right-hand side. And we just got done by quality, and the second goal is magnificent from Messi with the quality that he does."
Although numerous fans blamed Tuchel's replacement strategy, Neville insisted that the main problem lies in England's defense. He pointed out that defenders did not handle Messi's movements plus the players decided to pull back way too close to Pickford's net.

"People talk about the negative substitutions and putting defenders on. But it was those defenders not attaching themselves to Messi who were a massive factor. And us going so deep, as we were getting very close to Jordan Pickford."
Neville stated that he felt danger as soon as they got the lead and that the team had instead returned to drop back rather than continue applying pressure higher up the pitch.
However, Neville's statements provide insight into England's loss in the semi-final with the suggestion that the blame is not on Tuchel's tactics but rather on the inability of players to deal with constant pressure.
