Declan Rice has been battling fitness concerns in recent days. Although the Arsenal midfielder featured against Erling Haaland's Norway in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final, he was substituted at half-time as the England national football team managed his workload.

Rice remains one of the most important players in Thomas Tuchel's squad and is expected to play a crucial role against Lionel Messi's Argentina in the blockbuster semi-final. With questions surrounding his availability, the England boss has now provided a clear update on the midfielder's condition.

Thomas Tuchel Explains Declan Rice's Early Withdrawal

Rice had been suffering from a stomach illness following England's Round of 16 clash in Mexico City, with Tuchel revealing that the midfielder was confined to his bed for three days in the build-up to the quarter-final against Norway.

The England manager also explained that the intense heat and humidity in Miami made conditions even more challenging, prompting the medical staff to limit Rice's minutes. According to Tuchel, the conditions had the same effect as playing in temperatures of around 44°C.

"So we took a hard decision and took Declan off then, which paid off because Elliot could play the full 120, otherwise we would have been in trouble," Tuchel stated.

England Receives Huge Fitness Boost

The positive news for England is that Rice has recovered well and is expected to be available for the semi-final against Argentina. His presence in midfield will be vital as the Three Lions look to contain Messi and book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.

Along with Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham can help the Three Lions, with the attacking midfielder joining Kane in the Golden Boot race. Bellingham and Kane have both been prolific in front of goal and have scored five goals each.

With Tuchel putting to rest concerns over the Arsenal star's fitness, England have received a significant boost. The England vs Argentina FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final will be played at Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The match is scheduled for Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
