India head coach Khalid Jamil took full responsibility for his side's heavy 1-6 defeat to Uruguay on Tuesday, refusing to blame the players, the weather interruption or the loss of concentration as India ended their international window with two defeats and a draw.

Anirudh Thapa had briefly raised India's hopes by cancelling out Darwin Nunez's early penalty, but Uruguay ran riot after the 34-minute weather interruption to score five more goals and complete a comprehensive victory.

Jamil, whose side conceded 10 goals in their last two matches against Brazil and Uruguay, admitted that he had made several mistakes.

Khalid Jamil On Mistakes

“I fully blame myself. We should not give any excuse. I am not blaming anyone, but I made many mistakes. We have to rectify those mistakes,” Jamil said after the match.

Asked about the mistakes, the India coach said he needed time to assess both games before reaching a conclusion.

“Yes, many mistakes. You can say both. But now this is not the right time to say anything. I have to think about the two matches, who did what. There are many things, but we have to solve the problems immediately.”

Jamil identified concentration as one of the major areas India need to improve.

“The concentration, the lack of concentration of all the players - we have to give good instructions,” he said.

India had competed well during the opening stages against Uruguay, with Thapa equalising in the 22nd minute. However, after the lengthy weather break, Uruguay took control, with Maximiliano Araujo scoring twice while Rodrigo Zalazar, Juan Sanabria and Rodrigo Aguirre also got on the scoresheet.

Lessons From The Friendlies

For Jamil, the biggest lesson from the defeat was the cost of individual mistakes.

“One mistake can cost you. Sometimes we don’t know where one mistake will take us. So we have to be alert,” he said.

India had also suffered a 0-4 defeat against Brazil three days earlier, leaving them with 10 goals conceded against the two South American heavyweights.

Despite the disappointing results, Jamil insisted that facing such opposition was necessary for India's development.

Khalid Wants More International Matches

“I want to play more matches at this level. But I don’t want to blame anyone. It is what I said - it is my mistake. I can’t blame anyone,” he said.

With the Indian Super League set to begin on October 10, Jamil urged his players to quickly move on from the defeat and focus on their clubs.

“Go back to your clubs and give your best. After two matches, they are playing again. Don’t think that because of you we have lost. It is part of the game,” he said.
