Asian Games 2026: Parveen Hooda is the absolute embodiment of an old proverb, "Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls." Following a 22-month suspension by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) due to whereabouts failures, compounded by her father's cancer battle, winning a gold medal in the women's 65kg boxing event at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya showed her resilience in times of adversity.

Defying her circumstances, Parveen channelled her darkest phase into an unwavering comeback. With a podium finish today, a 3-2 split-decision victory over Chinese Taipei's Chen Nien-chin, Parveen marked a magnificent redemption.

Parveen Rose Against All Odds

Her mother, Neelan Hooda, recalled the tough phase when her father was battling stage-3 throat cancer. "When Parveen's Olympic dream was over, she would often be devastated that it was her chance to win a medal at the Olympics. In 2023, my husband had suffered from throat cancer, and when the ban came in 2024, he was still undergoing chemotherapy," Neelam Hooda said, as quoted by the Indian Express.

Burdened by the emotional weight of her father's illness and a career seemingly hanging by a thread, Parveen's grit, combined with her mother's faith, finally bore fruit on Friday with an Asian Games Gold. Her father healed from cancer last year.

From Suspension to Gold Medal Glory

Parveen's 22-month ban ended last year in May. With her meticulous training and professional rehabilitation, she reasserted her dominance at the national and international arena. She won the gold in the 60kg category at the BFI Cup before triumphing at the World Boxing Cup in New Delhi over World Championships silver medallist Aneta Rygielska last year.

However, she lost 2-3 to Sacha Hickey of England in the 65kg quarter-final at the Glasgow CWG. In Japan, she beat 2025 World Championships silver medallist Navbakhor Khamidova 5-0 before a 5-0 semifinal win over China's Li Shu.

Explaining her shift from 57kg to 65kg in the space of three years, her coach Anil Malik said, "We had to work on her straight as well, how to use that strength with the tactical acumen and motor ability required in 60 and then 65kg. The opponents too have more power in 65kg, and it is crucial to land clear punches as well as evade the heavier punches with one’s foot movement. The focus was more on training for clearer punches."

Next Goal Is World Cup In April

After the gold medal victory, Parveen's father, Lakhpat Hooda, expressed his pride and said that the next targets are the April World Cup and 2028 Olympics. Talking to ANI, he said, "The next goal is the World Cup in April; she will win that too. And then looking ahead to the 2028 Olympics." He added that the villagers are planning a grand welcome for her after the Asian Games gold at Aichi-Nagoya.
