India’s encouraging performance against Panama in their 1-1 international friendly has given the Blue Tigers another opportunity to measure themselves against a higher-ranked opponent.

While India were unable to hold on to their lead and secure a victory, the performance against a Panama side with World Cup experience offered valuable lessons about the level the team needs to reach.

Following the draw, Panama coach Thomas Christiansen outlined what India must do if they are serious about qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in the future.

According to the Panama boss, playing friendlies against strong opponents is useful, but it cannot be the only part of India’s long-term plan.

Panama Coach Calls For Improvement At Every Level

Christiansen stressed that India needs to strengthen several areas of their football ecosystem, including the domestic league, infrastructure, coaching and player development.

“We have to move forward and improve in all aspects. The domestic league has to be better, the infrastructure has to be improved. We have to create the best environment for the footballers to improve. At the same time, we have to bring in good coaches and teach the players the necessary things,” Christiansen said.

India Can Learn From Games Against World Cup Teams

Christiansen also highlighted India's recent exposure to strong opposition, suggesting that such matches can help the players understand the level required to compete at the highest stage.

“ What India did well was to play against three teams that have played in the FIFA World Cup window. That will help them understand where they stand. It will give them an idea of the level they need to reach to play in the World Cup,” the Panama coach said.

Long-Term Planning Key For India

Christiansen made it clear that qualifying for the World Cup would require more than isolated results against bigger nations.

He shared his views towards long-term planning, stronger infrastructure, a competitive domestic league and better coaching as important components of player development.

He also stressed the importance of consistent work and ambition if India are to close the gap with established World Cup nations.

Christiansen’s thoughts also echo similar observations recently made by Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti about the importance of building the right footballing structure and development pathway rather than relying solely on individual matches.
