The Indian women's hockey team ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over China in the final on Friday, securing the continental title and a direct qualification berth for the LA Olympics 2028. With this Gold medal, India's tally rose to 16 golds.

Lalremsiami scored the decisive goal as India held their nerve against a determined China, with goalkeeper Savita Punia making a crucial penalty-stroke save to preserve the lead and help her side complete a memorable campaign.

The victory sparked emotional scenes at the final whistle, with Indian players embracing each other, some in tears, before lifting head coach Sjoerd Marijne in celebration.

India Took Early Lead

India had taken a 1-0 lead into half-time after Lalremsiami produced a superb finish to break the deadlock at 10 minutes. China responded strongly and were awarded a penalty stroke, but Savita came up with a brilliant save to deny the hosts and keep India ahead.

The Indian defence then stood firm through the remaining two quarters as China looked for an equaliser. India absorbed the pressure and protected their slender advantage until the final hooter, triggering celebrations among the players and support staff.

The gold medal is India's first in women's hockey at the Asian Games since the 1982 edition in New Delhi and only their second overall in the event.

The achievement also completes a remarkable comeback for a team that had endured a difficult period over the past year.

India's Comeback To Grab Gold

India had missed the Paris Olympics after losing to China in the semifinal of the Hangzhou Asian Games. The defeat meant they missed the direct qualification opportunity available to the Asian Games champions and eventually failed to make the Paris Games.

The period that followed was equally challenging, with multiple injuries affecting the squad and India enduring a poor Pro League campaign. They finished at the bottom of the standings and were relegated from the competition.

Marijne then returned to take charge of the Indian team, beginning a rebuilding process that has now culminated in Asian Games gold and Olympic qualification.

Under the Dutch coach, India showed signs of a significant revival at the World Cup, where they finished fifth.

Thewin is particularly significant for senior players such as Savita and captain Salima Tete, who were part of the team that experienced the disappointment of missing the Paris Olympics.

For Lalremsiami, the match-winning goal added another memorable chapter to her international career, while Savita's penalty-stroke save proved equally important in a final decided by a single goal.

From a team struggling with injuries, relegation and the disappointment of missing Paris, India have now finished fifth at the World Cup, won the Asian Games title and secured their place at the Olympics.
